Seminar 3: Sustainability/ LEED & Life Cycle Costing -Their Role in Value-based Design Decision-making (VM)
Sustainability, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), LCC (Life Cycle Cost) and sound decision-making are considered to be the key elements in improving the ability to meet client demands for enhanced building performance and sustainability (green). Today more owners desire sustainable solutions that are not only cost effective but protect the environment , like saving water, energy, and many other resources. The focus for value specialists can be “green within the green” by seeking environmentally sustainable solutions that are also cost effective. In this sense the owner gains a green solution that is life cycle cost effective. This mini-workshop was conducted in an interactive approach focusing on sustainability, life cycle costing, and checklists such as “LEED” to identify ideas for project consideration. Guest Speaker Dr. Stephen J KIRK Stephen J Kirk is a president of Kirk Associates specializing in VE, sustainability, and life cycle costing services. He has over 25 years experience in applying value based design decision making techniques to corporate offices, educational buildings, visitor centers, courthouses, research facilities, and hospitals. He is a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, professional education program. He served as president of SAVE International in 1998-99 and is also a Fellow of SAVE. During the seminar, Dr. Kirk introduced the basic information of Value Management. Summary of Content
