Dr. Barton has given a preliminary concept of value management to the
participants. He has clarified that the function of an object lies in
the way people use it. The same object will have different meaning for
different people, and different object may serve the same function if
used properly. Therefore, it comes out the question of what the customers
really need. The critical advantage of value management is to guide practitioners
to identify the real requirement or intention of the customers rather
than confining their perspectives into the components of the object itself.
Through different levels of abstraction, we could shift our attention
from component details to the intention of the object, which may help
to come up with better solutions that could satisfy all use and aesthetic
functions required but with less cost. A technique of assigning cost to
functions is also introduced by Dr. Barton, which is quite useful in analyzing
the value of the component and finding out the part that needs to be improved.
Value management is not only a technique to optimize design, but also
a technique for bringing stakeholders together and having their needs
identified, which helps to make them work towards the same output and
to enhance knowledge sharing among professionals, which are crucial for
project success.
