Project title

Optimization of Teaching Styles and Learning Approaches for Construction Education (SRG grant no. 7001411)
supported by Fundable CERG project, under Strategic Research Grant, CityU

Abstract:

With the transfer of the sovereignty of Hong Kong from the UK to the People’s Republic of China in July 1997, construction professionals in Hong Kong have a greater opportunity to cooperate and work with construction professionals in Mainland China. Hong Kong has been described as a ‘show case’ for Mainland China (Lee and Postiglione 1994). In order to improve construction education in Hong Kong, a study of construction education can provide us with valuable information on how we might improve the teaching and learning quality of construction education in Hong Kong. This research study aims to: (1) identify the knowledge areas and skills actually required by the construction industry in Hong Kong; (2) investigate the current teaching and learning styles in construction education as applied in Hong Kong; and (3) identify the most satisfying teaching and learning styles for construction education. It is envisaged that the findings of (1) – (3) will be considered as a pilot study for re-constructing and re-structuring construction education in Hong Kong and thus help to develop effective teaching and learning styles for construction students in Hong Kong.
