Project title

Optimisation of the Stress and Performance of Estimators (October 2001 – September 2002)
supported by Direct Allocation Grant, CityU

Abstract:

The major function of an estimator is to predict the probable final cost of a construction project. Since most construction projects are of a fixed price nature, an accurate cost prediction would determine the project success and the ultimate profit margin. Cost estimation not only requires precise technical and analytical input from estimators, but also involves the use of subjective judgement. However, the short tendering period together with the accuracy required put a lot of stress on estimators. Clinical studies have shown that a reasonable level of stress could stimulate output, but excessive stress might seriously affect an individual’s performance. The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of stress on the performance of estimators in Hong Kong. The objectives are to: (1) identify the factors causing stress to estimators; (2) examine the manageability of the stress factors identified; and (3) establish the relationships between stress and performance. It is envisaged that the findings of (1) – (3) will help to devise a Stress–Performance model for cost estimators, and this part of the research will be carried out in subsequent research studies
