Project title

Optimizing the Performance of Construction Project Managers through an Integrated Proactive Stress Management Model (January 2006 - December 2007)
supported by CERG, Hong Kong Special Administration Region

Abstract:

In recent years, Hong Kong has faced a serious recession (GDP decreased by 5.5% from HK$1,344.5 billion in 1997 to HK$1,259.8 billion in 2002), which reflects the fact that a lot of construction projects have been downgraded or postponed. This has a significant influence on the performance of C-PMs and the profitability of construction companies in the market. Construction management not only requires innovative technical and analytical input from C-PMs, but also involves the use of subjective judgment. The demanding time pressure together with the dynamic social process in a project team places a lot of stress on C-PMs. The purpose of this research is to enhance and optimize the performance of project managers in Hong Kong (a challenging environment) through integrated stress management. The objectives are: (1) to establish individual Stress–Performance relationships (Stressors, Stress, individual Coping Behaviour (iCB) and Performance) for C-PMs; (2) to verify the individual Stress Management model for C-PMs by real cases; and (3) to develop an individual Stress Management model for optimizing the performance of C-PMs. It is envisaged that the findings made while carrying out these objectives will help in devising an individual proactive Stress Management model for C-PMs, and that this research will be continued in subsequent studies that seek to develop an organizational proactive Stress Management model for construction companies.
