Project title

A Commitment Model for Maximising Project Success and Participant Satisfaction (November 2002 – October 2004)
supported by Strategic Research Grant, CityU

Abstract:

Construction activities typically involve multi-party participation. Project team members, depending on their respective expertise, contribute towards the success of the project. Their inputs are often interdependent but may conflict in some circumstances. This is particularly so where competition exists for limited resources such as time and budget allocation. Hence, the project team cannot achieve synergy if the members do not share common goals. Projects goals expressed as time, cost and quality requirements are seldom disputed. However, in times of economic difficulty and uncertainty, commitment to self-interest becomes a key focus, whilst commitment to project success and participant satisfaction is tested. Hence, it is critical to investigate goal commitment amongst temporary project team members in order to improve the implementation of complex construction projects in Hong Kong, especially in these changing times.

This research study aims to: (1) identify the factors causing commitment amongst professionals; (2) examine the influences of the factors upon the manageability of commitment; (3) establish relationships between the commitment and the project outcome; and (4) develop a model to optimize the goal commitment and the final outcome (success/satisfaction) for construction projects in Hong Kong. It is envisaged that the findings of (1) – (4) will lead to further research on devising management techniques that optimize critical goal commitment. These techniques shall be used in managing construction projects in Hong Kong.
